After Wisdom Tooth Removal: Care Tips and What to Expect

At Sunset Family Dentistry in Norfolk, VA, we understand that recovering from wisdom tooth removal can be a concern for many patients. Proper postoperative care is essential to ensure a smooth recovery and to prevent complications such as infection or dry socket. Below is a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the healing process after wisdom tooth extraction.

Immediate Postoperative Care

After the extraction, a gauze pad will be placed over the surgical site to help control bleeding and promote clot formation. It’s important to leave the gauze in place for at least 45 minutes before discarding it. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze with a fresh piece and bite down gently.

During the first 24 hours, avoid rinsing your mouth, spitting, or using a straw. These actions can dislodge the blood clot that has formed at the extraction site, which is crucial for proper healing. Dislodging the clot can lead to a painful condition known as a dry socket, which may require additional treatment.

Pain Management

As the local anesthetic wears off, some discomfort is normal. Your dentist may prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter options such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Take medications as directed and do not exceed the recommended dosage. Applying a cold pack to the outside of your cheek in 15-minute intervals can also help reduce swelling and alleviate pain during the first 48 hours.

Activity and Rest

Plan to take it easy on the day of your procedure. Avoid strenuous activities, as these can increase blood flow to the surgical area and potentially cause prolonged bleeding. Most patients can resume regular activities the day after surgery, but it’s essential to listen to your body and rest as needed.

Diet and Hydration

Stick to soft, easy-to-eat foods such as yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, or soup during the first few days of recovery. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that could irritate the surgical site. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, but avoid using straws, as the suction can disrupt healing.

Oral Hygiene

Maintaining oral hygiene is important after surgery, but care must be taken around the extraction site. Begin brushing your teeth the day after surgery, but avoid contact with the surgical area for the first few days. Instead, gently rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution starting 24 hours postsurgery to keep the area clean and reduce the risk of infection.
